Premedical/Preveterinary Education People interested in attending medical school after completion of their baccalaureate degree are not limited in choosing a major. However, they must complete certain courses for entrance and which provide the needed basis for desirable performance on the national Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Those planning to go to veterinary medical school will best major in biology and prepare to take either the VCAT or MCAT or GRE as indicated by the veterinary school of their choice.

At the end of their junior year, students take the MCAT exam and must score in the upper 30% of those taking the exam to be likely to be admitted to medical school. In addition, they must have a cumulative GPA in college of 3.5 or better.

Premedical Scholars Program York College, York Hospital and the Penn State College of Medicine at Hershey cooperatively offer a special Early Assurance of Admission program for exceptionally accomplished students who enter our Premedical Scholars Program immediately following their senior year of high school. Recommendation of individuals to this program is made for interested and appropriately qualified York College Premedical Scholars at the end of their sophomore year via a special application and interview process which involves both York College and the Penn State College of Medicine. Admission to the York College Premedical Scholars Program does not guarantee recommendation to the Penn State College of Medicine Early Assuranceof Admission Program. In addition, those accepted into the Early Assurance of Admission Program, must maintain their credentials and make MCAT scores at or above the mean of the previous year's entering class in each section of the MCAT exam.

Individuals who are interested in attending medical school, who have been accepted to York College for the fall immediately following their graduation from high school, have an outstanding high school record, and who have a combined SAT I score of 1250 or higher at the time of admission to York College are invited to apply for the Premedical Scholars Program. Continuation of excellence as well as conduct becoming to the medical profession is anticipated while the students are involved with the program and at all other times. Students accepted to the Premedical Scholars Program participate in a series of preprofessional development experiences made possible by the close coordination of York College and York Hospital's teaching and research programs. As indicated above, students accepted to the Premedical Scholars Program who maintain appropriate grades while taking approved courses may request recommendation to the Early Assurance Program at the Penn State College of Medicine at the end of their sophomore year.
