Special Topics in the Physical Sciences - PSC433 The catalog description for this course is as follows: An interdisciplinary science course designed to introduce topics of current or special interest. The course crosses over the perceived barriers which define each scientific discipline via a broad based, interdisciplinary approach to the study of selected science topics.

Prerequisite: Junior class standing

Next anticipated offerings: Spring, 1998 as part of a National On-Line chemistry course on environmental and industrial chemistry; Fall, 1998 as part of a national on-line chemistry course on pharmaceuticals, their preparation, regulation and marketing.

When last offered, this course was taught locally as part of the first National on-Line Chemistry Course. We were one of 20 collegiate institutions to participate. It is described quite completely at the following web site: http://www.py.iup.edu/college/chemistry/chem-course/webpage.html

In this course, the Internet was used for discussions between industrial authors of papers and students at the participating institutions. In addition, students at various locations submitted papers to be chosen for national discussion. The course title and description were: Title: Environmental and Industrial Chemistry

Description: "A study of the relationships between industrial chemistry and environmental chemistry as they affect one another in the operation of chemical facilities in a global society. ...an intercollegiate course involving electronic dialog among students, teachers, and experts from both industry and academia. The on-line computer character of this course [provides] an unprecedented opportunity for sharing a wide variety of viewpoints and applying chemical knowledge to important current problems."

Nationally, it was operated by the Committee on Computers in Chemical Education, Division of Chemical Education, American Chemical Society. Another course in Environmental and Industrial Chemistry will be offered as part of the On-Line2 course during Spring, 1998. A topical outline may be seen at: http://www.py.iup.edu/college/chemistry/chem-course/syll.htm

A more detailed list of assignments may be seen at:http://www.py.iup.edu/college/chemistry/chem-course/assign.htm

In Fall of 1998, another national on-line course will be offered locally under this title: Pharmaceuticals, Their Discovery, Manufacture and Regulation
