Given two points we can find a thing
They call the rise o'er the run
It is the slope of any straight line
And here for example's one

Let's suppose the equation
For the line is 2x + 3
It rises two when it runs by one
So two is what the slopes gotta be

Now the thing a mathematician seeks
Is a generality
The answer is a slope of 'M'
For y = mx + b

Students, if the equation's x squared
Don't you do what I have done
For now, it's not a straight line
So make the two points one

And when we make the two points one
The space between goes to zero
Then the slope at any point on the curve
Must be 2x, as you know

You've heard a concept in Calculus
It's called the derivative
It will be the ruin of many poor students
To whom a failing grade I'll give
