G242 - Post travel Course

This is a series of two courses to be taken consecutively for a total of 3 credits (1 credit in the fall and 2 credits in the spring). The fall course is the first in a two-part series that integrates academic perspectives on how to make a positive difference in a globalizing world with the experience of doing local and international service work. The objective of this semester is to understand contemporary perspectives on globalization, development, and social change in an international context. This course will prepare students to travel to an international destination. During the winter break we will travel to Southern India and volunteer at orphanages run by HOINA. Students will be expected to help out in whatever capacity they are asked that will benefit the staff and children in the homes. Daily activities include teaching English to staff and students, helping prepare food, painting/whitewashing, and of course - playing with the kids! Upon return from India we will once again meet in the classroom and the objective of the spring semester is for students to think critically about their travel experiences and to analyze how individuals or groups can make positive differences in an increasingly globalized world. Permission of the instructor required. Please contact me if you are interested. this satisfies ADR V requirements.
