Professor
McAdams specializes in Modern European history. She teaches Western
Civilization I and II and upper-level courses on Modern Germany, Modern
Europe (19th and 20th centuries), Nazi Germany, and Women and War. She is
also faculty facilitator for York College's Model European Union
delegation. Professor McAdams is currently writing a book on Women in the
Two World Wars, and continues work on her project on women in the workforce
in East and West Germany in the 1950s and 1960s.
The
red and green men used on this Web page are the pedestrian crosswalk
symbols used in the former East Berlin. They are known as Ampelmänner or Ampelmännchen,
and depict soldiers stopping or walking. With the renovation of the former
East Berlin infrastructure after the "turn" (Die Wende) of 1989, these symbols were largely dismantled
from the crosswalks of East Berlin. Their uniqueness, however, sparked a
"Save the Ampelmann" campaign, and
therefore, visitors to the eastern half of Berlin can still see them on
numerous street corners.
