The red and green men used on this Web page are the pedestrian crosswalk symbols used in the former East Berlin. They are known as Ampelmänner or Ampelmännchen, and depict soldiers stopping or walking. With the renovation of the former East Berlin infrastructure after the "turn" (Die Wende) of 1989, these symbols were largely dismantled from the crosswalks of East Berlin. Their uniqueness, however, sparked a "Save the Ampelmann" campaign, and therefore, visitors to the eastern half of Berlin can still see them on numerous street corners.
