America in the Sixties

Course Description:
This course is designed to provide the student with an examination of one o =f the more eventful decades in American history. The course will be focused upon three primary topics: the Civil Rights movement, the war in Vietnam, and the cultural adventures during the period. It is expected that by exploring these topics and that political, social and economic conditions that evolved, the student will develop an thorough understanding of the decade.

Methods:
Course material will be presented in a variety of methods. Several times during the semester lectures will be used to introduce topics. Assigned readings, both in the form of required text and reserve readings, will be crucial to the success of the class. Students are expected to complete all reading assignments on time and be prepared to discuss those readings. Discussion will be a primary method through which course material s explored. Students should plan to participate in discussion session regularly. In addition to readings, video presentations will be used extensively throughout the semester. Videos have been selected to reinforce weekly reading and lecture topics.

Grading:
The students’ semester grade will come from a combination of the following:
1. three essay    = 40%
2. A “sixties” photo album = 15%
3. a bulletin board project = 15%
4. 10 article reviews   = 10% (1% per reading)
5. class participation  = 20%
